The Buttermint Twins

I was asked to give a talk in church today on the Beatitudes from the Sermon on the Mount. In it I shared my famous buttermint story from my stint in Las Vegas. The story became such a hit, it was even referenced in Sunday School afterwards on our lesson of faith. The only problem is that now some of the ward members started calling me the buttermint girl. This is what happens when I share my life experiences :) I left out the best part too of Laura and I yelling, "Dawg, Buttermints". Matt didn't feel it was necessary for the story.

Since I spent so much time preparing this talk and it documents a crucial experience in my life, I felt this would be a good opportunity to share it. Here it is...

The Beatitudes

In the Beatitudes, Jesus has given us eight ways to find joy. Each of his declarations begins with the word ‘Blessed.’

The word beatitude comes from the Latin beatus, which means fortunate, happy, or blessed.
The Beatitudes describe ways to live a happy life by working on ourselves internally. Each one tells of a blessing we can receive. These blessings can help each of us be prepared for entrance into the kingdom of heaven.

The Beatitudes have been called the stairway to Christ - lessons that build upon each other.
Speaking of these lessons, President Gordon B. Hinckley said “If you will shape your lives according to their pattern, I promise that you will know peace and happiness, growth and achievement.”

Poor In Spirit (v3)

The first lesson in the Beatitudes is: Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

When I first read this verse as a teenager, I was confused. Being poor in spirit just didn’t sound like a good thing. I thought either I am supposed to be lacking in spirit or I am physically supposed to be poor, neither of which sound right.

I have since learned that to be poor in spirit is to feel yourselves as the spiritually needy, dependent upon the Lord for your clothes, and your food and the air you breathe, for your health and your life.

Being poor in spirit takes realizing that no day should pass without constant prayers of thanksgiving to our Heavenly Father, for guidance and forgiveness and strength to get through each day.

So if we live every day dependent on our Lord, we can inherit the kingdom of heaven. I love this reminder. If we remember Him in every thought we have, every decision we make, and every word we speak, He will guide us back to live with Him.

Mourn (v4)

The second lesson from the Beatitudes is:  Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.

What a wonderful promise to have! I could think of nothing better for someone whose heart is troubled.

Christ was not just talking about mourning for those who have lost a loved one. This mourning also means showing godly sorrow that brings about repentance and a change in actions.

This is a great example of our need to meet the Lord halfway to receive amazing blessings. He will give us comfort when we turn to Him with our trails.

And for those who are mourning due to temptation, the Lord requires us to turn to Him and go through the steps of repentance.

In a way this lesson reminds me of the chorus of a country song called “Meet in the Middle”:

I'd start walking your way
You'd start walking mine We'd meet in the middle ‘Neath that old Georgia pine

We'd gain a lot of ground
Cause we'd both give a little
Ain't no road too long
When we meet in the middle

Except in this situation, we are not meeting at an old Georgia pine J but something much better.

When we meet the Lord in the middle, we will receive His comfort, and no road will be too long.

Meek (v5)

The third lesson from the Beatitudes is: Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.

A meek man is one who is not easily provoked or irritated and who is slow to anger.

A quality that, if we all possessed, would bring more peace to this world.

President Lee said “Meekness is not synonymous with weakness. The meek man is the strong, the mighty, the man of complete self-mastery. He is the one who has the courage of his moral convictions, despite the pressure of the crowd.”

I cannot think of a better example of a meek man than the Savior. When others mocked Him or spoke unkindly of Him, or tried to provoke Him, Christ’s response was one of love and kindness.

Even as the Savior suffered on the cross for us, His words to Heavenly Father were “forgive them, for they know not what they do.”

If the Savior can feel this way for His persecutors, then there is NO reason for us to respond to those who are unkind with anything but love and kindness. It takes more strength to respond this way, than to give in to what we feel we deserve.

Hunger & Thirst After Righteousness (v6)

The next lesson from the Beatitudes is: Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.

President Lee asked: “Did you ever hunger for food, or thirst for wate,r when just a crust of stale bread or a sip of tepid water to ease the pangs that distressed you seem to be the most prized of all possessions? If you have so hungered then you may begin to understand how the Master meant we should hunger and thirst after righteousness.

Laura and I

Buttermint Story

After my third year at BYU, one of my roommates, Laura, and I decided to move to Las Vegas for a couple semesters and get jobs in the big hotels.

Having decided on a whim, we were not fully prepared. We moved down there with no furniture, enough money for just two months rent, and nothing but a confidence that we could get jobs right away.

Well it actually took us two months to get jobs. We had completely miscalculated our money situation. The summer heat came and we didn’t have enough money to pay for air conditioning. Our parents had discouraged our move, so we felt that we couldn’t ask them for assistance. We ate peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for every meal because Laura’s mom ended up bringing us a few groceries. I couldn’t even afford medicine for tonsillitis I got my first week there.

Our lowest point came when we had to dig through the seats of our cars to find enough money to split a Del Taco burrito.

Our first Sunday attending our new ward, we walked into the church building and saw the most glorious site: a huge bowl of buttermints. I cannot tell you how my heart leapt and my stomach yearned for such a treat. We opened our purses and started filling them with mints.

During our raid, I turned around to discover the doors to Sacrament meeting wide open and everyone was looking at us. Apparently our excitement had interrupted the prayer.

Imagine my embarrassment, with my hand in the bowl shoveling mints into my purse. From then on, we were known as the “buttermint twins.”

Now I realize what President Lee meant about hungering for food when just a crust of stale bread… or in my case mints… seemed to be the most prized of all possessions.

This very hungering and thirsting… but for righteousness… is what Heavenly Father wants us to have so that He can fill us.

If we are as excited to be righteous as Laura and I were to see buttermints, imagine how much better our lives would be. This desire for righteousness would keep away temptations, help us make better decisions, and make us more teachable.

President Lee continues that “It is that hungering and thirsting that leads those away from home to seek fellowship with saints in sacrament services and that induces worship on the Lord’s Day wherever we are. It is that which prompts fervent prayer and leads our feet to holy temples and bids us be reverent therein.”

From the Savior’s similar sermon to the Nephites, we learn that “they shall be filled” essentially means “they shall be filled with the Holy Ghost.”

Gospel truths and testimony are received from the Holy Ghost through prayerful seeking, faith, scripture study, righteous living, listening to inspired communications and counsel, reverent personal study, and quiet contemplation. It is by these means that our souls are nourished and we realize the promise given that we will be “filled with the Holy Ghost”.

Merciful (v7)

The fifth lesson from the Beatitudes is: Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.
Our salvation rests upon the mercy we show to others. Unkind words and actions disqualify our claim for mercy when in need at the day of judgment.

In Doctrine and Covenants section 64, verse 10, the Lord reiterates this message “I, the Lord, will forgive whom I will forgive, but of you it is required to forgive all men.”

The key words here are REQUIRED and ALL. We are required to forgive all men, even if they are mean or spiteful to us.

Pure In Heart (v8)

The next lesson from the Beatitudes is: Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.

If you would see God, you must be pure. Some saw Jesus only as a son of Joseph the carpenter. Others thought he was a drunk or that he was possessed by devils. Only the righteous saw him as the Son of God.

If we want to be pure in heart, we need to start by seeing good in others. Imagine if we were to start seeing others as Heavenly Father sees them and imagine how different our lives would be. No longer would anger or unkind words come so easily… Think of the good that we could do in the world with this love toward others.

Peacemakers (v9)

The seventh lesson from the Beatitudes is:  Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.

President Henry B. Eyring said of being called the children of God “When I read that as a boy, I wondered about the promise to be called the children of God. It didn’t sound like anything very glorious. But I see now that the promise is both glorious and sure.

Those who will have eternal life are the children of God. I testify that … When you act with faith to offer the gospel and peace to those around you, they will feel the light of the Savior. You will have pointed the way.”

Being a peacemaker is a blessing not only to yourself but to those around who need your help to keep them from saying or doing something they will later regret.

Persecuted

The last lesson from the Beatitudes is: Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.

Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.

Just as in Jesus’ time, our church members have a long history of persecution. Though the methods of persecution differ, we still experience this today. How much easier this persecution feels knowing that our reward will be great in heaven!
President Lee said “If you stand firmly for the right despite the jeers of the crowd or even physical violence, you shall be crowned with the blessedness of eternal joy.”

Conclusion

In conclusion, I’d like to reiterate that the Beatitudes form the stairway to Christ which will help us to become like Him.

But as with any stairs, it takes effort to climb this stairway. Some say it is impossible, but it is not if we take one step at a time. It takes us meeting Heavenly Father in the middle of the step to receive the blessings that will help lift us up to the next step.

I am so grateful for the wonderful example and guidance of our Savior who lived to show us the way back to our Heavenly Father. I find my days a little brighter and my burdens a little lighter after studying the words of our Savior.

And I’m grateful for a loving Heavenly Father who constantly watches over us.

Hippity Hopping at the Company Picnic

Being that I'm on the social committee at work, I was put in charge of planning the company picnic. We decided to create our own Silicon Valley County Fair complete with an ice cream cart, cotton candy machine, "petting zoo" consisting of stuffed farm animals on the tables, games, and our own "Best of the Best" exhibit hall with four areas of competition - bread/rolls, jams/jellies, desserts and homemade crafts.

Part of the fun was an hour of organized games - tug of war (so competitive!), water balloon launching, and a relay obstacle course including potato sacks, running with a ball on a little shovel and hippity-hop balls.

One of my co-workers challenged me to a race through the obstacle course and cheated not once...but twice! She started before I was even in my sack and then instead of hippity-hopping back to the finish, she got up and started running. But in the end, I took her down (literally) and ended up winning!

Check out what I did by watching the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kzWqRutlaEI - skip to about 1:20 for our race. I'm on the right.

I'll post more pics of the picnic when I get them.

McGhee Reunion San Clemente Feb 2012

In February, Matt's immediate family got together in San Clemente for a family reunion. We all stayed together in a rental home by the beach which was as you would imagine - a load of fun mixed with a load of chaos :)

Kathy spent so much time putting this event together and making sure we all had fun together. The weekend was jam-packed with food, games, singing time, playing at the beach, taking family photos, visiting a marine rescue center, more food and a baby blessing for the little McKay.

Below are some of the photos to highlight the Reunion:

The newest addition, McKay was the biggest hit with everyone as you can see. There was not a moment he usually had to himself. That's what you get for being so cute I guess.

The kids found plenty of ways to have fun on their own and just loved being together.

The McGhee fam tried their hand at Minute to Win It games - a repeat hit from the last reunion.

We all spent had a blast playing many different games together and driving each other crazy.

And when we weren't playing games, we just loved spending time together.
In order to keep our sanity, we went outside as much as possible and played at the beach though the weather in February was not the perfect beach weather.

Part of the fun this reunion was our International Food night complete with empanadas, tempura,  Tim Tams and, of course, the Tim Tam Slam and a presentation from Bekah and Skyler.

Occupy the Oakland Zoo

Yesterday I met my mom at the Oakland Zoo. Neither of us had been there before and we wanted to see how it compared to the Sacramento Zoo.

We had a fabulous time and even though the Sacramento Zoo is probably better, we were surprised at the number of animals they had and the spacious homes each animal had. I always feel bad when you go to a zoo where the animals seem to be squished into a tiny home. But at the Oakland Zoo the animals had more than enough space.

We walked through the whole zoo then rode a train through "Wild Australia" which sadly consisted only of emu and kangaroo. But our favorite part of the visit was riding the Skyride over the animals though I got a little nervous when we were stopped right over the lion cage.

Here are pics from our trip:
The tortoises having a walk off

The sea otters were curious about us. So cute!

I'm a turtle! I can't tell you how long it took to fight off the kids to get a chance to take this photo.

Mom enjoying the beautiful scenery

Bunny trying to hide. This is probably the first zoo to have a bunny exhibit. Imagine my excitement to find these little guys!

Just hangin out with the giraffe and gazelle

Hahaha lovin the meerkats, almost as good as the prairie dogs at Marine World

This guy was all tuckered out

Check out the rack on this thirsty deer

Lazy bison

The lion below us on the Skyride. We got lucky early on to this guy roaring over what looked to be a hairball.  Don't see that everyday.

We were nervous about a fight as this female lion approached

But she just came to snuggle up with him.

These gazelle were running around earlier but tired by the afternoon. Apparently they are being fed well, the gazelle in videos are usually quite a bit smaller.

This means war!

I am officially declaring war on the snails trying to attack my garden. Initially when I planted my garden about, I tried to give them a chance hoping they would not harm my plants. But lately I've been noticing holes in a couple plants.

My poor basil plant being eaten away
Today I discovered two snails on my plants eating away and learned that my assumption of peace was wrong. So now I bust out the salt and will do all I can to protect my little plants. Matt helped me with my war strategy and I have decided to begin the war with two simple tactics - one is lining the outside of my garden with salt, the other is creating my own pests traps consisting of planting plastic cups throughout the garden holding milk or yeast. Supposedly the milk and yeast will attract pests and will trap them in my cups for me to destroy (or move to somewhere else for those with weak dispositions).

I wish it didn't have to be this way but alas, the snails have chewed on my plants for the last time. Hopefully those are the only pests I have to battle with.

Below is a picture of my garden, complete with six homemade traps, just about two months after planting.

My first sign of real life - my tomatoes
The other problem I am running into is overcrowding in one area. My cucumber plant and squash are overtaking my little pea shoots and my basil plant. Check out the pictures below for evidence. Any advice would be appreciated on how I can fix this.

Cucumber plant on left the small stem plants in the middle are two pea shoots completely knocked over because of the cucumber.

Closer views of the peas and cucumber

Squash plant overshadowing my basil
My cilantro bush is also battling the squash but I'm not as worried about it and it seems sturdy enough to fight back.

Here is a before and after comparison of my garden today compared to my planting in May:

BEFORE: My garden in May

AFTER: the right side of my garden today
The left side of my garden today with my thriving tomato plant
As you can see, the strawberry plant in the middle of my garden has not changed much. I did notice a new shoot today though so it may just be a late bloomer. Someone told me these plants spread so I gave this a lot of room which look silly now.
As you can see my plants are really growing and I could not be happier! But now I have to figure out how to keep them alive and producing! It's like a part-time job.

New York, New York

Matt and I were lucky enough to head to New York the beginning of May for a 3-year anniversary celebration. This trip was way overdue as New York is one of my absolute favorite cities and one which Matt has not has the pleasure of exploring. The only time he had been to New York was in mid-April for work but he did not have time to experience much.

I had also been dying to go visit Dawn and Ben and meet their new little girl. We stayed with them for the first couple nights in their cute but tiny Upper Westside apartment then we headed up towards the Columbia University campus where we stayed for a couple nights in an apt subletted by some friends of Ben and Dawn's.

Matt and I had a blast in New York essentially eating our way through the city. We were determined to find the best New York pizza joint and along the way discovering popular eateries. We tried many different places and here is what we thought.

As soon as we landed at Dawn's apartment she took us out for lunch at a little neighborhood pizza joint which kicked off our pizza craziness. I just love the thin crust goodness and if you know Matt, you know his neverending love for anything pizza. We hit up the popular Bleecker Street Pizza but were disappointed with how dry it was. My favorite pizza actually came from a place in the food court at Grand Central Station of all places. So random but so delicious! Matt's fave was little hole-in-the-wall joint by the place we stayed near Columbia University. For him he was won over by the fact that they were cheap, open 24 hours, and their slices were each as big as a normal whole pizza. Below are some pictures trying - just trying - to show you the scope of their pizza slices. You can see that our one slice is bigger than my whole head, probably bigger than my whole upper body.

I would have felt guilty about eating so much except we also did a lot of walking and Dawn had me out running with her and Ava through Central Park most days. We about did Matt in with all of the walking and after we all spent an afternoon in the park - Dawn and I running while Dawn pushed Ava in the strolled, Ben and Matt on longboards. Matt said his shins and calves felt like Jello after that.

Dawn's apartment also happened to be up 3 flights of steep stairs with NO ELEVATOR! What the?! We took turns pushing eaching up the stairs after eating our way through our days.

After two nights of seeing the restaurant below outside of the window of the apartment near Columbia, Matt and I realized our silliness. This is Tom's Restaurant, known to many as Monk's Cafe - featured on probably every episode of Seinfeld. Matt also pointed out that the "doot doot doot doot" song  written by Suzanne Vega I like is actually written about this very diner.

After realizing this, we of course had to try the food and actually really liked it. Not bad for a diner! I had to reel Matt in or we would have eaten there for the rest of the trip.

At the recommendation of many friends, we decided to try the Shake Shack one night but found it to be subpar of In-N-Out. We went back for a shake on our last night in town and loved that but thought the hamburgers and fries were too greasy. We'll stick with In-N-Out, thank you!

Me outside the Shake Shack (New York
s version of In-N-Out but in opinion, not nearly as good)
Between pizza tastings, we also threw down on some delicious desserts as well. Matt was adamant about trying a Magnolia cupcake which were featured in one of his favorite SNL skits, Lazy Sunday. After trying Magnolia's though I insisted Sprinkles cupcakes are better. So we headed to Sprinkles and Matt agreed.

But Dawn also introduced us to Momofuku's tasty treats. Their truffles were fantastic - like 10 steps up from cake bites which are already freakin' delicious.

After visiting the USS Intrepid and submarine next to it, we dropped in at the gift shop and bought some astronaut ice cream for Matt to try. And before we headed back the airport, Dawn would not let us leave until we had tried a black and white cookie - the quintessential treat. I really wasn't kidding when I said that we ate our way through New York!
Matt and Ava bonding :)

Having fun yet!

Me and Dawn

The absolute best part of our trip was getting to see Newsies: The Musical with Dawn. I woke up early one day and rode the subway for an hour by myself to wait in line and try to get us discount tickets to Newsies. Of course, I did and Matt volunteered to stay home and watch Ava while Dawn and I went to the show. I'm not sure if he was really not into Newsies - or a bunch of boys dancing around onstage - or if was looking forward to spending the night playing with Dawn's new, cool Google TV. But he was such a champ letting Dawn and I go out together.

Dawn admitted she had not been away from Ava for a long time so we drove Matt crazy checking up on Ava but the show was so AWESOME!!! and it took all I had no to get up and dance around the theater singing "Carryin the Banner." I mean it was weird not seeing Christian Bale running around but I really like the changes the producers of the play made compared to the Disney video.

As soon as I got home, I ordered the broadway soundtrack from Amazon and I listen to it atmost once a day for a little pick me up. Check out the video below for just a preview of what we saw:

Overall another great trip for KerMatt thanks to our wonderful friends :)
