Valentine's Day

Our engagement story

Matt and I drove down to San Diego for the weekend to visit his family and get out of cold Utah for the three day weekend. I was under the impression Matt had already made Valentine's plans for us, until at breakfast Saturday morning, he asked me what I wanted to do for the night.
Being the planner I am, I immediately got on the phone to make dinner reservations for us, while Matt just sat by and watched. Little did I know it was all just an act.
Finally arriving in San Diego, we hurry and got dressed up for our dinner reservations. But on the drive to dinner, I noticed that Matt had missed the exit for the restaurant. I pointed this out, and all he said (jokingly) was "I'll take care of it. For the rest of the night - I lead, you follow. And I have a surprise for you... I already made dinner reservations somewhere."
Surprisingly Matt heads to the coast of La Jolla (somewhere I wouldn't guess he would choose for dinner). He pulls up to Mount Soledad instead, a park in the hills of La Jolla with a great view of the ocean and the San Diego temple and he tells me he just wants to walk around before dinner.
With the help of his lovely friends, Dave & Jackie, Matt had put together a beautiful set up on one of the benches with a throw and decorative pillows, a candle and a radio playing love songs and the most gorgeous bouquet of red roses.  He even had sparkling cider and wine glasses! After toasting our relationship over Martinelli's and way too much small talk that seemed to take FOREVER, Matt got down on his knee saying "he needed to tie his shoe." He then pulled out a ring and asked me to marry him.
I said YES! right away, of course! But before I could say much more, the couple making out about 10 feet away from us ran over and gave us a hug (it was Dave & Jackie all prepared to capture this moment on camera).
If that wasn't enough of surprises for the night, four of Matt's single buddies also came popping out of the bushes. Apparently they had caught wind of what Matt was doing and didn't want to miss it either.
We all hugged and cheered - and it was so fun having them there! It wasn't until we got into the car that I realized what all had just happpened and we were truly engaged. I cried, Matt laughed and then we had to talk all about how he possibly managed to trick me all day.
I could never have asked for a better proposal! And now I have proof that Matt is more romantic than he thinks.
